Tea and weight loss
How to get your clients to loose their first 50 pounds?
As a health coach, you must understand where your client is coming from. Everybody presents with their unique experiences and personalities, challenges and hardships. Being able to comprehend where that individual is in their psychological wellbeing and social interaction, will guide your recommendations. As a health coach, your suggestions must be in line with the client’s life and mannerisms. Although your goal is to change habits, sustainability can simply not be achieved if the suggestions are wildly out of range. Building trust with your client is key, and trust comes with seeing that you, as the health coach, has empathy and knowledge. What is the best approach to weight loss?
Fiber is key in the diet of someone who needs to lose weight. Fiber will reduce the inflammation in the liver and mobilize bile. When the inflammation in the liver is reduced, there will be a decreased amount of pro-inflammatory markers made in the liver. Additionally, there will also be less inflammatory markers sent to the blood and muscles. more fiber and less inflammation will block insulin resistance. This is key to block further weight gain. When we eat a diet high in fiber, we also eat a diet low in calories. Fiber, present in vegetables and fruit, grains and beans, all add bulk to fill your stomach quicker. The fiber also help to lower insulin resistance, and blood sugar release is slower. With high fiber, we feel no hunger for longer. Fiber also helps with gut motility and improves the microbiome bacteria, that in turn also reduces fat synthesis through bacterial and gene interaction.
As a health coach, should you be bothered by adding antioxidants to help with weight loss?
Remember that there are more to antioxidants that Vitamins A, C and E. Think about why herbs and spices are so healthy. They do not contain any vitamins A, C and E. Instead they contain other molecules called antioxidants that act to bind free radicals in a very effective way. For instance, cinnamon is healthy as a spice because its antioxidants help to reduce insulin resistance for people affected by type 2 diabetes. Another example is the herb called thyme. The thyme leaves are very high in antioxidant molecules that bind free radicals. In facts it is considered the most potent herb to bind aggressive oxygen free radicals. When you are a health coach for a client who needs to lose weight, remember that weight loss does not simply occur when we control kcal in and kcal out. In fact the prior equation taught in university about “calories in equals calories out” is simply incorrect because research shows us that the food we eat can increase inflammation in the liver and have a direct effect on weight gain. All while kcal in = kcal out! So my point is that it is essential to increase antioxidants in the diet for someone who needs to lose weight. Without antioxidants, weight loss will not be sustained and the weight loss can rebound very quickly. What type of tea is good for weight loss?
Green tea has obtained considerable attention in the last ten years about its health benefits. Green tea is healthy because it is correlated with the blue zone in Japan, where people live into their 100’s. Green tea contains an antioxidant called EGCG. This functional molecule has multiple health benefits and we are discovering the wealth of these benefits to be increasing as more research is done on green tea’s effect on Alzheimer’s disease and other neurological disease states. But green tea is not the only tea with benefits. Basically all tea has tea catechins, molecules found in tea that provides the capacity to bind free radicals. When milk and sugar is added, the potency of these catechins and their ability to act as antioxidants is diminished. Nevertheless, when tea is consumed in its natural form, every tea is healthy. Obviously, there are the top teas to drink for the most health benefits. Some of these benefits include an increased capacity to metabolize sugar and fat. The tea that can increase the metabolism of sugar and fat is a tea from Africa, known as “Rooibos”, also called Red tea. Rooibos is a delicious tea and has a functional molecule named “aspalathin” that can help metabolize sugar and fat, thereby helping with weight loss, blood sugar regulation and fat metabolism after a meal. Rooibos tea can be purchased at your local supermarket and is very tasty in its plain form.
